Cytological Study of <i>Begonia</i> Sect. <i>Baryandra</i> (Begoniaceae)

Begonia sect. Baryandra is distributed mainly in the Philippines with a few species Borneo and New Guinea. Previous chromosome information of has restricted to ca. 16 their karyotypes have never been investigated. Here we report cytological investigations 26 Baryandra, including five karyotype analyses that are first 24 were reported cytologically for time, two re-examined. Incorporating previous present studies, numbers 40 78 now available. Except some intraspecific variant counts 2n=26 44, tetraploid number 2n=56, 39 either 2n=28 or 30. The karyotypic formula three investigated uniform as 2n=28=10m+18sm(st), 2n=30=8m+22sm(st). Based on molecular phylogenetic relationships, ancestral state reconstruction suggests 2n=30 most likely derived number. our evolution discussed.
